Subject: Beautiful WWI-era children's book
Alsace is a region that was captured-lost-captured during the Franco Prussian War and the same thing happened during WWI so kids of that time would have been extra scared at the thought of invading Germans. Even if you can't read French you'll get the jist of the story. The illustrations are beautiful.
